Plenty of careers described as “future-proof” exist entirely behind a screen: a few lines of code, a spreadsheet, a video call. But some of the most resilient work sits at a different intersection altogether, where technology, judgement and physical work all have to show up in the same place, at the same time, for the same customer.
Automotive locksmithing is one of those trades. It doesn’t get much attention in career conversations, and it isn’t the kind of work that shows up in a typical “jobs of the future” list. What has changed is what “replacement key” actually means. Modern vehicles increasingly rely on transponder chips, immobiliser systems, proximity keys and remote-entry fobs. Cutting a piece of metal to the right shape is often only the first, and sometimes the smallest, part of the job. Pairing that key electronically to the specific vehicle is usually what makes it actually work.
This shift also means the trade has become broader, not narrower. Fleets are ageing in several major markets. Research into automation potential consistently finds a similar pattern. Predictable, repeatable activities, including data processing and physical work carried out in controlled, predictable environments, are the most automatable, with technical automation potential estimated between roughly 64% and 81% of the time spent on those activities. Unpredictable physical work, of the kind that requires travelling to a new location, assessing an unfamiliar situation and adapting on the spot, was estimated at only 18% to 26%, among the lowest of any activity category studied.[5] On-site automotive key work, which combines travel, inspection of an unfamiliar vehicle and hands-on judgement, sits much closer to the harder-to-automate end of that spectrum.
What AI cannot do is show up at the roadside. It cannot inspect the physical vehicle, verify that the person requesting access is actually the owner or an authorised party, gain legitimate access to that specific vehicle, cut and finish a physical key, connect programming equipment safely, correctly pair a key to the vehicle’s systems, diagnose an unexpected electrical fault, or take responsibility for the finished job.
